Kenya Ranked Third Most Tech-Enabled Country in Africa

Kenya was ranked the third most tech-enabled country in Africa in the Network Readiness Index (NRI) by the Portulans Institute and Said Business School at the University of Oxford.

According to the 2022 NRI rankings, Kenya was ranked behind South Africa and Mauritius on four dimensions of digital readiness, technology, people, governance and impact. 

The NRI ranked 131 countries on affordable and accessible technology that makes life easier for people and improves economies.

Kenyans rank third in Africa is the highest by any East African country, with its main strength being related to Technology and Governance.

Globally, Kenya was position 77 on the NRI rankings by the Portulans Institute and the Said Business School. 

Regarding sub-pillars, Kenya ranked highly on future technologies, governments and trust, among others, effectively demonstrating Kenya's strong digital presence. 

Furthermore, Kenya was the only African country that was considered to have significantly climbed in the ranking. The other three countries in this category included China, India, and Brazil. 

However, the report indicated that Kenya's greatest scope for improvement was impact in which the country ranked in the 98th position out of 131. 

Kenya's neighbours within the East African Community performed dismally in the global rankings, considering that the closest country was Rwanda, ranked in position 101.

Tanzania appeared in position 107 on the list, while Uganda was ranked position 116 on the global list. 

Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were among the bottom-three countries in the rankings, considering that they were positioned 129 and 130 on the global list, respectively. 

The list is released annually, with the researchers looking at 58 indicators across the four dimensions.
