Winnie Odinga Wins Round 1 in EALA Race

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga's last-born daughter, Winnie Odinga's nomination to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) was approved by the Senate on Thursday, November 17. 

Winnie received 35 votes while Mombasa businessman Suleiman Shahbal garnered 38 votes. 

Former Wajir Woman Representative, Fatuma Gedi received 31 votes while Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka's son Kennedy Musyoka got 25.

Jubilee party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni got only one vote. Former Kieni Member of Parliament, Kanini Kega clinched 29 votes while former Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire got 17 votes. 

On the other hand, for the Kenya Kwanza nominees; former Mombasa senator, Hassan Omar got 46 votes, former nominated senator Falhada Dekow got 43 votes and former Nandi Woman Representative Zipporah Kering had 37. 

Former URP Secretary General Fred Muteti scooped 39 votes while former nominated MP David ole Sankok had 35 votes. 

The voting process was in accordance with the gazette notice issued by the Clerk of the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge and his counterpart from the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye who acted as the presiding officers of the elections.

"Pursuant to Rule 15 (1) of the East African Legislative Assembly Elections (Election of Members of the Assembly) Rules, 2017, we, the Presiding Officers, appoint Thursday, 17th November 2022, as the election day,” read part of the notice.

The Kenya Kwanza Alliance was allocated five slots to fill while the Azimio la Umoja- One Kenya will have four slots. The final round lies in the National Assembly where the legislators will tally their votes and pick the representatives. 

The nominees selected by Kenya Kwanza included Hassan Omar, Kering, Sankok, Muteti and Dekow.

On the other hand, Azimio nominated Winnie, Shahbal, Bosire, former Turkana Water and Irrigation CEC Beatrice Askul, former Shinyalu MP Justus Kizito and Mohammed Diriye (Wajir).
