Deputy Army Commander (DAC) Major General Peter Muteti flagged off the main body of the Kenya Signals Company (KENSIG) to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
During the ceremony held at the Embakasi Garrison on Saturday, November 19, the team was sent to the war-stricken country to provide and support communication connectivity and information technology services to the mission and the force.
"Being the first KENSIG troops, endeavour to uphold the exemplary performance registered by your predecessors who have already been deployed to DRC," he stated.
He also urged the troops to cultivate good relations with the DRC citizens and other contingents operating in the area.
"Diligently strive towards delivering on the mandate and strictly observe the rules of engagement so as to remain a credible force as it has demonstrated before by Kenya Defence Forces troops in UN missions," the Deputy Army Commander encouraged.
Notably, the elite group, led by Captain Sheila Kathile, is part of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in DRC (MONUSCO).
In Congo, the troops will be tasked with maintaining, processing, and troubleshooting military computer systems and operations.
They will also incorporate encryption and decryption technologies as it plays a key role in the coordination and communications in warfare.
Additionally, with technological advancement, experts can use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in several areas like cyber security, communication, and surveillance.
Through technology, experts can weaponise some of the warfare materials.
Security experts state that access to the internet and communications is critical not only for ground combatants but also for the activities of the government and the various agencies involved.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, an international peace envoy, also toured the country to mediate talks between DRC forces and the M23 rebels.
