John Makali is on the brink of despair after he claimed frustrations from his former boss over three months' salary arrears.
So aggrieved is the journalist that he drafted a demand letter to Metropol TV, threatening to sue for compensation for the stipulated period.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke Makali lamented that the company had frustrated him for five months now to the point of losing hope over the arrears.
He accused Metropol TV of not adhering to a signed employment contract and failing to pay him Ksh70,000 owed to him.
“I was forced to write a demand letter through my lawyers on November 18, 2022, because it is five months now and I am yet to receive any payment,” he explained.
According to the demand letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Makali’s contract ran between July 1, 2021 to July 31, 2022.
By the time his contract ended, the company had not paid him arrears amounting to Ksh70,000.
Metropol TV sent Makali an email dated October 4, 2022 indicating that he would be paid his dues.
"Please find attached your final dues letter, kindly acknowledge and scan back for filing and payment as well,” read part of the email.
Makali affirmed that he adhered to the instructions as per the email but nothing came to fruition.
“I was taken into circles until it became apparent that my former employer was not willing to pay me,” he remarked.
According to the demand letter, the company had seven days ending on November 24, 2022 to pay the Ksh70,000.
On what will happen if the notice lapses, Makali explains, “Through my lawyers I will sue the company for the dues and seek to have them pay all bills that I have accumulated in the past five months.”
Before his contract ended at Metropol TV, Makali was a sports journalist hosting Kapu la Spoti and also anchoring 7PM news. Currently, Makali works as a freelance journalist.
