Two Nation Media Group (NMG) journalists were assaulted by security attached to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's wife, Dorcas Gachagua.

A clip seen by Kenyans.co.ke on Thursday, November 24, showed NMG's Murang'a correspondent Mwangi Muiruri being clobbered by individuals dressed in plain clothes in the company of a police officer.

His colleague, Martin Mwaura of NTV, also had his phone confiscated by the security after capturing the assault on camera.

In the clip, a voice believed to be that of Mwaura is heard shouting at the officers informing them that the victim was his colleague.

The duo had gone to cover an event in Murang'a County where the Second Lady was scheduled to spearhead the distribution of relief food in the hunger-stricken area.

The fallout, however, came when the journalist took out his phone to record the proceeding in line with NMG's digital first content strategy.

The officers, who pounced on the journalist, however, were accused of disregarding the media badge the journalist claimed was clearly displayed for identification.

It was, however, not clear whether any of the two journalists sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo, in a phone call to Kenyans.co.ke, confirmed receipt of the assault complains and launched investigations into the incident.

The assault occurred just months after another NMG journalist, Ian Byron, was assaulted by unknown people on Sunday, July 10 at Kakrao shopping center in Migori county.

At the time, a statement by the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) indicated that the assault occurred a few days after Byron filed a harassment report following a story he had done touching on Suna East MP Junet Mohammed.

MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo, therefore, maintained that the Commission was on high alert over increased cases of assault against the press.
