Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kithure Kindiki, announced the government will release Ksh200 million to hasten the construction of the runway at the Kanyonyo Airstrip to enhance the delivery of essential supplies.

While speaking on Friday, November 25, at the Kanyonyo Border Police Training College in Kitui, Kindiki noted the airstrip will also be used for the transportation of security personnel.

"The airstrip will facilitate the evacuation of injured officers who require specialised medical attention and help in the movement of necessary equipment," Kindiki stated.

In addition, the CS explained the facility is being used to train officers deployed to areas where terrorism exists and rampant cases of cattle rustling.

According to Kindiki, this airstrip will help the country enhance the logistical capacity for evacuating and transporting military officers.

Kindiki conclusively recognised the effort put in by the US government in the establishment of the regional counter-terrorism centre.

"It is billed as a trailblazer in the region and will help boost the country's role in countering local and cross-border terrorism," the CS added.

Furthermore, through the facility, Kenyan and regional police will be equipped with new skills in combating emerging crimes and raising the country's security profile.

The government expects the facility to be fully operational in nine or 10 months.

“Much of the work here is being done by officers. In fact, this is the best description of value for money, and I think our agencies should learn on how this institution has managed to achieve quite a bit of facility with very little resources," he lauded.

Some of the key projects set to be undertaken by the government involve an ultra-modern hospital to be launched and an international-standard stadium to improve sporting and recreational activities for officers
