The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) has threatened to take legal action against other Media Houses for infringing on the exclusive broadcasting rights issued to the station regarding the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

According to KBC's Managing Director, Samuel Maina, the national broadcaster had acquired Exclusive Free to Air (FTA) rights to air live matches on Television and Radio.

Further, the media house had non-exclusive public viewing rights within Kenya.

The MD affirmed that KBC was the only legal station to exclusively air the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

"We take this opportunity to bring to the attention of the public that KBC is the only station that has exclusive 2022 FIFA World Cup Free to Air (FTA) broadcast rights for both TV and Radio in Kenya. Legal action shall be taken on any party that infringes on these rights," read part of the statement.

According to the notice, KBC TV would air 28 selected matches while the radio stations would broadcast all 64 matches.

"The tournament commenced on November 20, 2022, and will run through to December 18, 2022.

"KBC has acquired Exclusive Free to Air (FTA) broadcast rights to be aired live both on Television and Radio. Additionally, KBC has non-exclusive public viewing rights within Kenya.

The MD urged the members of the public to access the matches on subsequent signals such as signet, Zuku, Azam TV, and Pang among others.

"Therefore, catch all the FIFA World Cup action LIVE and Exclusive on KBC Radio and KBC Channel 1 TV which can be accessed on a free-to-air basis on the following platforms, Signet, DSTV, GOTV, Zuku, Pang and Azam TV."

KBC's warning came amidst claims of various media Houses extracting segments of the matches to be used as part of their content during prime-time news.

Weeks before the showpiece in Qatar, the state-owned media house ran adverts of its exclusive rights, asking viewers to stay tuned.
