At least four people died, while others incurred critical injuries after a bus heading to a wedding in Karen, Nairobi, overturned along the Meru-Nairobi Highway.
The accident occurred in Njuri in Tharaka Nithi County on Saturday morning, December 3, at around 5 am.
Multiple reports indicated that the bus with nearly 46 passengers belonged to Ruiri Girl's High School in Kiambu County.
Police confirmed the incident, noting that the 46 were members of Thau Methodist Church from Tigania East.
Tharaka Nithi County Disaster Manager, Alex Mugambi, added that operations were underway to rescue four more people who were trapped in the bus.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the bus rolled on the highway after one of its tyres burst, forcing the driver to lose control. Despite efforts to prevent the accident from occurring, the speeding bus swerved and overturned.
Emergency service providers rushed the injured to Chuka County Referral Hospital while the dead were ferried to a nearby morgue.
The tragedy came days after Noah ferrying students home for holidays, was involved in an accident along Kipkelion, Kericho County.
Some of the injured students from St. Clare's Girls School Maragoli were rushed to the nearby hospital.
However, no deaths were reported from the accident that occurred in the afternoon.
In mid-November, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) stated the total number of victims of road accidents between January and October increased from 16,642 in 2021 to 17, 550.
Motorists have been cautioned to be careful on the roads, especially during the festive season, to avoid the loss of innocent lives.
