President William Ruto revealed that he renegotiated his World Cup bet with First Lady Rachel Ruto after losing the delicate gamble.

Speaking in Kajiado county on Wednesday, December 21, the Head of State noted that Rachel had agreed to support his tree planting course by allowing him to plant one million trees instead of paying for the bet in cash.

Ruto - who was celebrating his 56th birthday - noted that the initiative was noble, especially, due to the fact that Kenya was going through a difficult climatic condition.

However, he did not reveal the amount of money that he was supposed to pay in order for him to settle the bet.

"From the World cup, you know that I lost my bet and in the heat of the moment, I placed a bet with the First Lady. I lost the beat and I have been trying to find my way around it.

"I asked how these things happen and I was told by a friend that these things end in 90 minutes while another told me that it was 120 minutes. The people of Kenya unanimously stated that I should pay my bet," he stated.

Nonetheless, he maintained that the tree planting exercise was still demanding even as he called on his friends to join him in the exercise.

"I still have a problem and you will have to help me. I look forward to good friends to help me offset this bet," he stated.

He also explained that the move would help in his administration's efforts in combating climate change that has seen Kenya face adverse effects in recent years.

In commemorating his birthday, Ruto planted 56 trees to signify his age.

"President Williams Ruto is to launch the National Tree Growing & Restoration Campaign on his birthday; to plant 56 trees commensurate to his age, on his 56th birthday.

"He will kickstart the tree growing campaign that targets to mobilize the nation in growing 15 billion trees by 2032," read a statement by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed.

The Head of State lost a bet to the First Lady during the World Cup Finals between France and Argentina where the latter won on penalties.
