Azimio Coalition has made four fresh demands to President William Ruto’s government that they want to be fulfilled in 2023.
The demands were made by the leader of the minority in the National Assembly, Opiyo Wandayi on Saturday, December 31.
The vocal lawmaker and a close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga was speaking in Kisumu County.
Increase minimum wage
Wandayi decried poor pay extended to Kenyan workers in the public and private sectors.
“Millions of Kenyans work hard but they have nothing to show off their labor due to poor salaries."
"As Azimio we will lead a debate in 2023 that will force the government to review the country’s minimum wage,” the MP announced.
Under the Regulation of Wages (General Amendment) Order 2022, the minimum wage in Kenya ranges from Ksh8,000 per month for unskilled labor to Ksh34,000 for skilled labor.
Cost of management of education
According to Azimio, there is a total lack of clarity at the ministry of education.
Wandayi claimed that the education ministry under the leadership of Ezekiel Machogu as the Cabinet Secretary is marred in confusion.
The coalition will push the government to make clarity on the following areas;
- The fee structure in public schools.
- Future of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
- Government funding of public universities.
Government appointments.
The coalition will bring a debate in parliament to push for equitable and merit-based appointments and promotions in the public service.
Social protection programs
Azimio stated that Ruto’s government had done away with social protection programs that had been initiated by former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
In 2023, legislators allied to Azimio la Umoja will push for the reinstatement of those programs according to Wandayi.
The demands came a month after Wandayi made another list of demands on December 7, which he termed back then as 'The Kamukunji Declaration."
