Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Migori County, on January 3, launched a manhunt for a 'lone wolf' reveller who attacked a police officer in a pub.
The suspect reportedly stabbed a senior police officer inside a local entertainment joint on Sunday night, January 3, during a failed operation.
Concerned revellers at Apple Bar in Masaba Centre called on a contingent of police officers to apprehend the suspect, who was publicly brandishing a machete and a knife.
In response to the threat, officer-in-charge of Masaba Police Post attempted to disarm the man, who did let go of his machete, but reached out for his knife and stabbed the cop.
"Police officers responded to the call but instead got attacked by the man who refused to surrender," Kuria West Sub-County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo.
The police officer was injured in his right upper thigh as the suspect disappeared into the night.
His colleagues who rushed to the scene, later after, teamed up with members to offer him first aid before rushing him to Masaba Medical Centre.
According to Kimaiyo, the officer was discharged after treatment at Masaba Medical Centre.
"The suspect remains currently at large, but he will soon be caught since we already have very good leads," Kimaiyo warned.
Police further raised concerns over the rampant use of machetes to attack members of the public.
On Thursday, December 22, 2022, a three-man machete-wielding gang was nabbed by detectives drawn from Pangani police station after they stormed a church, seeking solace.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the gang scampered for safety after ambushing a woman along Muratina road in Mathare, Nairobi.
One of the thugs was fatally wounded after he turned to the officers during the chase and tried to attack them with a machete.
The Nation Police Service vowed to crack down on syndicate criminal gangs using crude weapons to carry out criminal activities.
