Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua scheduled a meeting with Meru county leaders after President William Ruto asked him to solve the rift between Governor Kawira Mwangaza and Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
Speaking to the media on Friday, January 6, Tigania West Member of Parliament, John Mutunga disclosed that the DP was scheduled to meet with the MCAs on January 8 after the Cabinet retreat.
Mutunga explained that the move aimed to prevent further escalation, which saw Mwangaza impeached.
It was also revealed that the DP would later meet with the Mwangaza to hear her story before the two factions hold a joint meeting.
"We want to understand the genesis of the problem, then meet with the governor and the ward reps.
"We do not want these issues to escalate again and we are determined to resolve the matter,” read the statement in part.
Mutunga also revealed that the intervention of Ruto followed a series of meetings they held with Gachagua over the same.
He explained that many feared the woes would make them miss out on development projects Ruto had promised to undertake in the county.
Gachagua's move to convene the meeting barely came days after meeting with MPs at his office on January 4.
At the time, the DP stated that he was trying to understand the differences in the county even as he called on the unity of the vote-rich region.
The differences between Mwangaza and the MCAs saw her get impeached after 68 out of 69 MCAs supported her ouster.
Mwangaza was impeached after she was accused of nepotism, making illegal appointments and disrespecting other leaders.
However, she got a reprieve after Senate overturned the decision noting that the MCAs did not substantiate their claims.
