Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja detailed how he will resolve his differences with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Through a press statement on Sunday, January 8, the governor revealed that he will seek the Deputy President's counsel.

Sakaja told the press that he understood the role of the national government and its interdependence with county governments.

“I will not be having public altercations with the deputy president or any other elected leader.

“I will seek the President and his deputy privately to sort out issues that affect Nairobi residents,” the first term governor remarked.

The governor further warned other politicians arguing that they were fueling discord between him and the deputy president.

“There are some politicians especially from other parts of the country that are trying to create a tiff between me and national leaders.

“They should desist from doing so because I have a lot of respect to my seniors and there are no differences between us at the moment,” Sakaja warned.

Even though Sakaja downplayed the row between him and the deputy president, he stated that no one will direct him on how to run the county.

“We understand that the national government has its role in affairs of Nairobi, but the county also has its role that must be respected.

“No one will stop us from playing our role of restoring order and dignity in the city of Nairobi,” he remarked.

Sakaja’s plan to move public service vehicles from Nairobi had drawn sharp criticism from Gachagua who warned the governor of making drastic decisions without consulting him.

“I will meet Sakaja because I am the one who helped him get elected and so any decision, he makes in Nairobi must be agreed upon first.

“The issue of kicking out Matatus out of Central Business District (CBD) will hurt our businesses and should not happen,” Gachagua warned Sakaja on December 20, 2022.

His sentiments were supported by Kiambu County Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba and Nyeri senator Wahome Wamatinga who warned Sakaja to listen to Gachagua or face political consequences.

Sakaja in his press statement warned leaders who are not from Nairobi from making such pronouncements terming them as tribal and divisive.

“Let us not accept anyone to cause divisions in our city, I will not allow anyone to sow discord within Nairobi residents,” Sakaja vowed.
