In a bid to save his family from the shackles of poverty, Phelix Makhanda from Kisumu County decided to sell his kidney.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, January 10, Makhanda recalled his efforts to make ends meet near the border of Kenya and Tanzania.

When his efforts proved futile, he took a pen and made a placard announcing his kidney was for sale, "I am selling my kidney to take my brother to school," read part of the placard accompanied by contact details.

Makhanda was hopeful that with the money from the sale, he would start a flourishing business.

"I saw I did not have any options. I resorted to selling my body parts, the kidney to be precise. I was in Kisumu at the moment, I do not even know who took the photo," he narrated.

Following his announcement, Makhanda received numerous calls but one buyer caught his attention. He was offered Ksh10 million for his kidney.

Excited and overwhelmed, Makhanda got in touch with the agents who informed him that the buyer was willing to spend Ksh10 million.

"With the Ksh10 million, I would have constructed a home for my mum and educated my siblings," he recalled.

They visited him at his home and convinced him to travel with them to the buyer.

While on the road, a tyre burst, and the agents fled as they assumed police officers were shooting at them. Makhanda was left clueless and stranded in the vehicle.

He was rescued by another motorist who questioned why he was in the company of the agents.

"If the man had not rescued me, I would not be alive today," he remarked.

Makhanda was given a place to stay for the night and an additional Ksh5,000 to travel back home. He decided to rebuild his life without selling his body parts.

He currently owns a beauty shop and an electronic shop as well as a charcoal supply business.
