Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday, January 12, had an opportunity to meet his former principal, Julius Kano Ndumbi, at Kianyaga High School in a reunion meeting held at his Harambee Annex office in Nairobi.

Gachagua showered praise on his former teacher, describing him as one of his mentors in the journey to leadership.

He thanked him for being stern and enforcing discipline in him, which he described as a significant input in his journey of becoming a leader.

According to Gachagua, the reunion was emotional- since he considered high school his stepping stone before later ascending to the pinnacle of Kenya's politics to his role as the Deputy President.

"The man was a strict disciplinarian. Tough, loving and wise. A father figure and a role model.

"I had an emotional reunion with my mentor last evening when he called on me at Harambee House Annex, Nairobi. I had the opportunity to thank him for the role he played in preparing me for leadership," stated Gachagua.

During the reunion, the DP also reconnected with his long-term friend, Maina Giandaru, whose friendship blossomed while they were still attending Kianyaga High School. Giandaru was nicknamed 'Hercules'.

"I am always grateful to those who mentored me in one way or another and played a significant role in shaping me and preparing me for leadership and for the future.

"Let's appreciate our teachers and the mentors who have played a significant role in shaping our destiny. I appreciate all my teachers and celebrate them for their dedication and service; teaching is indeed a noble profession and a calling," added the DP.

Gachagua attended Kianyaga High School for his "O" levels and 'A' levels between 1978 and 1983.

He later proceeded to the University of Nairobi for his Higher Education where graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science.

The now second in command started from humble beginnings before joining the government as an administrative officer during the reign of former President Daniel Moi.

He served as a District Officer before joining former President Uhuru Kenyatta as his aide in the early 2000s.

His debut in politics came in 2017 when he vied successfully for the Mathira Parliamentary seat.
