Four police officers who were on Monday, January 9, arrested over an alleged robbery attempt at a foreign exchange bureau in Nairobi were released unconditionally due to lack of evidence.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi court ruled that the evidence adduced was not enough to link the officers to the allegations against them.

However, the Investigating Officer told the court that investigations were ongoing to uncover the reality of the incident.

The investigator also noted that the matter would be addressed internally in accordance with the standing orders of the National Police Service.

On its part, the prosecution side requested more time to scrutinize bank statements and surveillance footage around the scene where the crime was alleged to have taken place.

"An inquiry file has been opened and the matter will be dealt with administratively under the national police standing rules,” the officer stated.

In addition, the court ordered the release of the mobile phones confiscated from the officers.

The four officers were reported for allegedly attempting to rob two men of Ksh2 million at the forex bureau.

A CCTV footage that captured the alleged altercation went viral leaving social media users enraged with what appeared to be a case of attempted robbery.

According to a subsequent police report, the four officers arrested two businessmen shortly after making a transaction in a bank.

They drove away with the two men only for their car to be intercepted by other police officers who had been tipped about the developments.

While making the release order, Ochoi also ordered the investigators to return the phones of the officers that had been confiscated.
