Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Sheriff named his cabinet nominees five months after taking the oath of office, the last of the 47 county chiefs to do so.
In a letter dated Sunday, January 15, Abdulswamad named 10 members of the county executive committee and seven advisors.
This followed recommendations from the Recruitment and Selection Panel that interviewed and shortlisted candidates who applied for the advertised positions.
"A shortlist based on refined criteria including but not limited to, experience, industry knowledge, gender considerations, and diversity. Top candidates were identified and their names forwarded to me for consideration," the governor wrote.
He named his deputy, Francis Thoya as the CEC for Environment and Solid Waste Management while Dr Swabah Ahmed was nominated to lead the Health docket.
Evans Oanda, who appeared in the Public Service Commission's (PSC) list of applicants for the job of principal secretary, was nominated to lead the department of Finance and Economic Planning.
Dr Mbwarali Kame, Daniel Otieno, Emily Achieng, and Mohamed Hussein will lead the Education, Transport. Water and Lands departments respectively.
Others nominees include Kenneth Muigai (Sports), Abdalla Kibibi (Blue Economy), and Mohamed Osman (Tourism).
Abdulswamad named Dr Noah Akala as his Chief of Staff.
He appointed several advisors to the governor including Mahmoud Noor (Innovation and Digital Transformation), Mohamed Tenge (Political Affairs), Fauziya Karama (Economic Affairs), Goshi Juma (Youth and Gender Affairs).
If approved, Gilbert Langat. Eucabeth Gesare and Dorcas Mutheu will provide counsel on Port and Maritime Affairs, Cohesion and Integration and Urban Renewal.
The list of nominees has been forwarded to the speaker for approval by the county assembly.
On January 10, Abdulswamad defended the delay in naming the cabinet members stating that he took his time to assemble an able tea, with the capacity to deliver to the people of Mombasa.
He refuted claims that the long wait was because of political undertones that required him to fold into demands of his party.
