Kericho County Woman Representative Beatrice Kemei Chebaibai came to the rescue of Mama Rachel Chepkwony, a suffering lady within her county.

Paying her a visit on Monday, January 16, Kemei promised to construct the jigger-infested lady a decent house.

In addition, she bought Chepkwony and her family some households goods during her visit. She was accompanied by Haron Rotich, the area Member of County Assembly(MCA), and Irene Chebet, a nominated MCA.

Public health officials and the residents of Kuresiet and Seretut Cheptororiet wards also accompanied the lawmaker - making her mission a success.

“Today, we paid a visit to the family and we availed some household goods so as to support them. I also committed to building the mother a decent house,” Kemi stated.

The suffering woman was also treated and her current house was fumigated.

“The patients were treated and they were placed under home care for a few days,” she added.

The Kericho woman rep explained how she was moved after learning about the devastating state of the old woman forcing her to send her team to investigate the matter.

“I learned of Chepkwony's plight, that of jigger infestation and later sent my team for a fact-finding mission. The findings broke my heart. The intensity of the damage is worrying,” she noted.

The Ministry of Health had previously warned that over 10 million Kenyans were at risk of jigger infestation if no efforts were made to eradicate the parasite.

The former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe raised the red flag during the 2022 national jiggers’ awareness day celebrations at Ng’elechom Primary School in Teso South Sub County, Busia County.

In a speech read by the head of the then Public Health Department Susan Mutua, Kagwe called for concerted efforts from all the stakeholders geared towards assisting those affected by the parasite.

Kemei's mission came after another young boy who was languishing in poverty was rescued.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika also came to the rescue of a top Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (KCPE) student who had resorted to menial jobs to raise her form-one school fees.

The Governor also intervened and elevated the life of a mother whose children had feasted on chameleons by offering her a job in the county offices.
