Families displaced by the construction of the Ksh39 billion Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone in Likoni will receive a compensation of Ksh1.4 billion.

A sum of 1,684 families was displaced to clear the way for the project expected to make Mombasa a regional logistics and manufacturing hub.

Trade Cabinet Secretary, Moses Kuria, speaking on Thursday, January 19, stated that the government targeted to operationalise the Dongo Kundu SEZ by July 2023.

Kuria stated that releasing the funds to the National Lands Commission would enable the subdivision of the 384 acres of land earlier purchased for the affected families.

Additionally, Kuria noted that the move would allow the issuance of title deeds to the families by the end of March 2023.

“The money has already been released for the affected persons. We will complete this exercise by March 31.

“We expect President William Ruto to visit the area soon and issue title deeds to the affected persons,” Kuria added.

In a meeting on Monday, January 16, the coordinating committee of the Mombasa SEZ chaired by Moses Kuria announced that the government had put in place advertisement plans to attract investors.

"We have agreed to advertise in the local and international media to attract investors in the 13 sectors," Kuria stated.

The centre is expected to comprise industrial parks, free trade zones, and other auxiliary services such as meetings, conferencing, and exhibitions.

African Centre for Corrective and Preventive Action filed a case at the Mombasa High Court seeking to stop the project, alleging that it would destroy the environment.

ACCPA further claimed that the project would produce industrial waste that would likely be deposited into the ocean.
