Career Options for 700,000 KCSE Candidates Who Scored Below C+

In the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (KCSE) results, 708,071 candidates scored below C+, the minimum university entry grade.

According to the results released by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Friday, January 20, at Mitihani House, only 173,345 candidates scored above C+, qualifying to get slots in different Universities across the country.

The 173,345 candidates will, therefore, be sponsored by the government and sent to various higher learning institutions by Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

With the government advocating for 100 per cent transition, all the 881,416 candidates who sat for the 2022 KCSE exams are set to get slots in different institutions of higher learning - majorly Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes and assorted colleges.

"I, therefore, direct the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service to move with speed and establish the number of places available in our universities, colleges and TVET institutions to enable the immediate commencement of the placement exercise," Machogu directed.

Career Options

Teachers Training Colleges

Students seeking to study for a diploma in education are expected to have a C plain or C-  to join any Teachers Training College (TTC). 

TTCs trains teachers and offer different specialties within the teaching profession.

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutes offer a number of courses to students who failed to hit the university entry score of C+.

Courses offered by various TVET institutes include Agricultural Engineering, Agriculture Machinery and Equipment, Air cargo Management, Animation and Digital Media, Tour Guiding and Community Development.

Others include Disaster Management, Electronics, Credit Management, Banking, Marketing, ICT Technician, Network and System Administration, Cyber Security and Aquaculture among others.

CS Machogu directed the relevant authorities to lay out strategies to make TVETs more accessible.

"Most of you by now know that President William Ruto is a firm believer in TVET Education. I, therefore, wish to urge all the stakeholders in this sector to rise up and be counted as we institute far-reaching reforms in the sector as would be recommended by the Presidential Working Party.

"Kenya National Qualification Authority (KNQA) and Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) must prepare to work to ensure that the agenda of TVET remains robust and able to spur the economy of Kenya through the production of well-trained youth," The CS directed.

Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC) 

There are different courses at the Kenya Medical and Training Colleges for fresh KCSE graduates and most KMTC institutes admit students with a minimum KCSE grade of C Plain.

The courses include Diploma in Registered Nursing (KRN), Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Diploma in Occupational Therapy, Diploma in Optometry and Diploma in Orthopaedic Technology.

Others include Diploma in Pharmacy, Diploma in Physiotherapy and Diploma in Medical Imaging Sciences.

Colleges and Polytechnics

Fresh KCSE graduates can also pursue courses offered in colleges and polytechnics which can aid them in advancing their qualifications to join universities.

Some areas they can focus on at colleges and polytechnics include Art and Design, Medical, Pharmacy, Theology, Religion and Bible, and Aviation among others.

At polytechnics, they can also acquire skills in welding, carpentry, tailoring, electric and plumbing sectors.
