The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) operatives on Friday, January 20, confirmed the arrest of a man suspected to have swindled Ksh900,000 from a microfinance agent in Mombasa on December 31, 2022.
According to a police statement dated Friday, January 20, the suspect, 22, compromised the information technology system used by the banking organisation before channelling money to six different Mpesa accounts linked to his name.
Investigations by the DCI established that the suspect executed his mission remotely from Kiambu County's Witeithie and Ruiru estates.
He was, reportedly, shifting his base in what appeared to be a well-orchestrated plan to beat safety systems.
"The high-level fraud which occurred on December 31, 2022, was executed between 3:30 to 5 pm by the 22-year-old suspect.
"Detectives believed that he was oscillating between two houses, one at Witeithie estate in Thika town and the other at Gitambaya in Ruiru," read the statement in part.
However, DCI's investigations led by sleuths from its operations base unearthed his scheme, albeit too late since the money was already transferred.
The suspect, DCI noted, left his Kiambu after realising that the sleuths were after him.
A subsequent manhunt flashed him out from hiding in his rural home at Gucha South in Kisii, where he was arrested three weeks after the incident.
The officers recovered Ksh600,000, three mobile phones and a computer suspected to have been used in the heist.
DCI took the suspect for further processing ahead of his scheduled arraignment before a Mombasa Court.
