Azimio la Umoja coalition-affiliated Members of the Nairobi County Assembly(MCAs) called for the release of Korogocho MCA Absalom Odhiambo Onyango alias Matakwey, a few hours after he was arrested.

Led by Makongeni ward MCA Jateso Peter Imwatok, the leaders demanded his immediate release issuing limited time to the government.

Speaking to the media on Monday, January 30, the MCAs stated that Matakwey had been detained at Kiambu police station and no one was being allowed to visit him.

The leaders further claimed that the government was subjecting them to harassment since Azimio started holding rallies in the country.

“After the two rallies our elected members are been harassed, and all I can say is that dictatorship is back, the Moi era is back but we are saying we want the Korogocho member released unconditionally within 12 hours,” Imwatok demanded.

He further urged the government to stop going after the followers of Azimio leader Raila Odinga and to go after him instead.

“We challenge the entire government to arrest Raila Odinga because that’s the man who tells us what to do,” he announced.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Matakwey’s lawyer Apollo Mboya revealed that efforts to trace where he had been detained bore no fruits.

“I have visited Kiambu, Nairobi area, and Central police station and he is not detained in either of the stations. Am preparing an application to have him released by midnight,” he noted.

Matakwey was arrested following inciting remarks he had made during the Kamukunji rally.

He was in the company of Mboya and Imwatok who revealed that they found three Subaru foresters and officers outside NCIC offices, who grabbed him and sped away.

AfterMboya tried to find out why his ally was being taken away the officers told him that they had received instructions after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua complained in relation to the same.
