Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja recalled all the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) workers who had been released.

Speaking on Wednesday, February 8, he announced that he would not allow unfair dismissal as long as he is the county's chief.

Sakaja stated that he had ordered all the affected workers to report back to work amidst the tough economic times that many Kenyans are going through.

“I directed that all former NMS enforcement officers whose contracts with NMS had expired to report back to work immediately and be paid their pending dues.

We will give them first priority to apply for the permanent and pensionable jobs under the Nairobi County Government,” he noted without stating the specific number of the workers recalled.

The county boss further emphasized that the workers who had active contracts would also be allowed to apply for Nairobi City County Government jobs.

“Those with ongoing contracts will also be encouraged to apply to NCCG for permanent positions. This includes health workers, drivers etc. I’ll not allow any officer to treat another with less dignity,” he added.

Speaking on September 30, 2022, during the handing over of the functions back to the county, the governor announced that he would absorb NMS staff.

"I really want to honour the NMS and staff at NMS you did a good job despite the challenges but I want to encourage you that we still need more of your industry.

"So, the people here should welcome those who had left, we will have space for everybody and I want to assure the nurses because many of them felt that when the NMS goes they will go home. We still need you to serve our people," he uttered.

In a letter dated February 1, 2022, County Government’s Chief Officer for Security and Compliance Tony Kimani announced that the county was planning to lay off 700 enforcement officers who were hired in 2021 by NMS, to plug a staff shortfall at the county government.

The letter was copied to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei and the County Secretary.
