Antony Wamagata Munyua, a man who went viral for cleaning an underpass in Kinoo, Kiambu County, for over three years, explained why he started the kindness venture.
Speaking on Wednesday, February 8, Wamagata revealed that he was forced to clean the tunnel after watching Kenyans risk their lives trying to cross the busy highway.
Wamagata was disturbed over how school-going children were dashing across the road, risking their lives every morning. It also exposed residents to the dangers of being knocked down by speeding vehicles.
Drivers also risked causing accidents because of distractions by pedestrians crossing the road.
Concerned by the filthy nature of the Kinoo tunnel, Wamagata volunteered to start cleaning in order to allow residents use it to get to the other side of the road.
"I have been cleaning this underpass for almost three years. I saw women and even school-going children struggle to dodge and cross the busy highway which I felt was not good," Wamagata told Citizen TV.
"After witnessing how people struggled to cross the road, and assessing the tunnel, I volunteered to start cleaning the tunnel to save the residents," he added.
Further, Wamagata revealed that the tunnel had been neglected after its construction.
"After a while, I started encouraging residents to use the tunnel because it was clean. The residents embraced the idea," Wamagata indicated.
Wamagata further formed a cleaning schedule and started sweeping on Mondays and Fridays. Moved by his actions, residents started giving him tips to appreciate his work.
He, however, appealed to the government to erect street lights in the tunnel. Wamagata indicated that residents had shunned using the underpass at night due to security issues.
Wamagata also appealed to residents to help him secure cleaning materials to help maintain the cleanliness of the underpass.
