Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha was on Thursday, February 9, appointed Chairperson of the Health Ministers Conference for the East, Central, and South African Region(ECSA).

Announcing her new position on her social media pages, the CS stated that she was determined to implement better healthcare services.

Nakhumicha's appointment was confirmed during the launch of the ECSA Adolescent and Nutrition Advocacy strategy conference, which began on February 4.

“On behalf of the Government of Kenya, I am honoured to be appointed as the Chairperson of the Health Ministers Conference.

“The vision of ECSA is to foster cooperation between member states for the improvement of health services for all our people,” Nakhumicha stated.

Additionally, she thanked the outgoing chairperson, a Minister from Zimbabwe, for leading the member states through the pandemic.

“I will endeavor to fulfill this vision and to work with all member states to attain the best health standards for our people,” Nakhumicha added.

The Director General of ECSA, Yoswa Dambisya, stated that they prioritised educating and creating awareness to highlight the need to strengthen regional collaboration and create solutions to emerging and re-emerging diseases.

“In the last two days, there have been robust discussions from experts within our region and beyond and we look forward to deepening such experts with the guidance of our Health Ministers,” Dambisya stated.

When she took over the Ministry of Health from Mutahi Kagwe in October 2022, then 30-year-old Nakhumicha was the youngest CS in President William Ruto’s Cabinet.

She had earlier worked as a supply chain management expert, having served in various organisations before her appointment.

"I recognize the tremendous work done by my predecessor and ministry officials. I look forward to doing more great and important things," the health CS stated after taking over office.
