Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, on Friday, February 11, recounted wearing one shirt from Monday to Sunday during a Valentine's Gala.

Addressing widows and widowers at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Pastor Dorcas revealed that she was compelled to wear the shirt, which was her father's.

According to the Second Lady, her widowed mother could not afford clothes.

"My background is not as rosy as it looks today. You can see me wearing a nice dress today, but it was not like this in my childhood. When I was seven years old, I was wearing the shirt of my deceased father," she recalled.

"My mother (a widow) gave us (children) each a shirt, and we would wear it from Monday to Sunday. We usually washed it at the river on Sundays and wait for it to dry. I, therefore, identify with the challenges facing the widows and children raised by widows," Pastor Dorcas further recalled.

While encouraging widows, Pastor Dorcas also revealed that she experienced economic and social challenges at a very young age when her father passed on.

Every woman, she added, could become financially independent even after losing their husband.

"I believe that every woman, when you lose your husband, you still can work and become independent. When a widower loses a wife, the same is true.

"When you are left exposed, there will always be someone to encourage you, and tell you there is hope for tomorrow," she added.

Dorcas Gachagua spoke at a dinner hosted by the Come Together Widows and Orphans Organisation.

In a previous interview, she recounted how she met Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at an event where she had planned to take her life.

Dorcas stated that she wanted to breach the security of the late President Daniel Arap Moi, an event her husband was attending.

"When the President stood, I ran across in line with where he was. I did not know how it happened as it was God's way of doing things. He (Moi) started coming towards me, and I bumped into him.

"That is where I met my husband as he was in charge of the delegation," she stated during an interview on KTN.
