President William Ruto nominated former Kitutu Masaba Member of Parliament (MP) Shadrack Mose for appointment as the next Solicitor-General.

In a letter dated Wednesday, January 25, Ruto wrote to the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula informing him of the nomination.

"It is most graciously notified that His Excellency Hon. William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, has in exercise of the constitutional prerogative vested in the Head of State and Government nominate Shadrack John Mose for appointment as the Solicitor-General," the letter read in part.

Ruto asked Wetangula, who doubles as the House Business Committee chair, to consider the nomination as a matter of priority citing the importance.

"This is in recognition of the mandate of the Solicitor General as the Deputy to the Principal Legal Adviser to the Government," the letter read in part.

The Head of State also submitted the nominee's curriculum vitae, testimonials, and the report of the Public Service Commission on recruitment.

If approved by Parliament, Mose will replace Kennedy Ogeto, whose term ends in March 2023. Mose was among eight candidates who were shortlisted for the job.

Others were Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi, Marykaren Sorobit, Beatrice Akuno, Paul Lilan, Stephen Mallowah, and Beatrice Meso.

Mose was among the Jubilee MPs who defected to UDA in 2021 but failed to defend his Kitutu Masaba seat in the August 2022 polls after he lost to Clive Gisairo.

His nomination comes amid a push from leaders in South Nyanza to have Ruto appoint a resident from the region to government positions.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu is the only cabinet appointee from the region, with locals and leaders hoping for more appointments.

Notably, the President has at his disposal several positions in the appointment of Chief Adminstrative Secretaries (CASs) and Ambassadors.
