President William Ruto is set to visit Ethiopia on Friday, February 17, to moderate a meeting to review the outcomes and implications of COP27 for Africa.
In the meeting, Ruto is expected to lead other African leaders in finding solutions for the ongoing climate change crisis in Africa.
"As a champion for climate action, President Ruto will advocate for Africa's potential to lead the world and demonstrate that the continent can industrialise, thrive, and prosper – in a low carbon and sustainable manner," State House noted.
As part of the solutions, African leaders will define various climate actions and reforms of the international financial architecture in 2023.
President Ruto is the Chair and Coordinator of the Committee of the African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).
State House noted that President Ruto is going to champion a safer and cleaner future that will be powered by renewable energy.
"President William Ruto will participate in the 36th Ordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government Summit, between 17-19 February, 2023," the State House statement issued by spokesperson, Hussein Mohamed, read.
African leaders will seek to increase Intra-African trade through initiatives promoting locally processed and semi-processed goods.
The leaders suggested higher potential benefits from greater regional trade for transformative and inclusive growth.
"President Ruto will be joining other African Heads of State and Government to deliberate on key issues aimed at accelerating Intra-Trade in Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework," the State House statement read.
The African leaders are also expected to address issues touching on peace and security in the continent, especially in Oromo Ethiopia, DR Congo and Nigeria.
Ruto is also expected to moderate a meeting to review the outcomes and implications of last year’s COP27 for Africa, in a summit scheduled for Nairobi in September 2023.
"The President will also invite the leadership of the continent and the world to the Climate Action Summit in Nairobi, to be held between 4-6 September 2023," Mohamed added.
