In Mutanga village in Nyandarua County, a young boy defied all odds to dig a 20 feet borehole at his home.
Peter Kariuki Maina, 12, narrated how he could not bear the agony of seeing his mother walk many kilometres in search of water.
“The main reason that made me result to dig this borehole was that my mother was ill and she had undergone surgery,” the Class Seven pupil explained the painful ordeal.
He commented on how his mother could not walk for long distances to fetch water like others because of her illness.
Their area, he added, faced water shortages forcing the residents to walk distances of up to 10 kilometres to get water.
The young boy remembered how he would come from school, change his uniform, and then dig the borehole.
Through this sheer determination, his friends came along to give him a helping hand digging the borehole.
On the other hand, his mother recalled how his son told her his intention to dig a borehole for her. She said she did not believe his young boys’ astonishing revelation.
After months of toiling and scooping soil from the hole, Kariuki’s efforts finally bore fruits, and he struck water.
Maina commented that the borehole was now serving most of his neighbours in the area, saving the residents the burden of trekking long distances in search of the precious commodity.
He also called on the government to aid the area resident with methods to collect and preserve water, seeing that the drought has continued to ravage many parts of the country.
