Drama unfolded in Bondeni, Nakuru County after the family of a 63-year-old man dropped his coffin at a restaurant owned by a man who allegedly owed him Ksh400,000.

Speaking to the media on Monday, February 20, the deceased's nephew Benson Mobegi claimed that the deceased's had loaned the owner of the restaurant, his life savings.

The rider had saved for eight years under a table banking group. However, efforts to try to recover the loan ended up in multiple excuses by the debtor.

"The businessman gave him a motorbike, which we estimate costs Ksh150,000, assuming it was brand new. However, since his death, the businessman has been avoiding us.

"That is why we decided to leave my uncle's remains here. We don't want the full amount paid, but for him to commit to settling the debt," Mobegi explained.

He claimed that the debtor, despite owning multiple cars and the restaurant business, did not bother to contribute during the send-off fundraiser.

Mobegi revealed that the accused allegedly fled to the nearby police station to seek refuge. Other family members headed to the station to record a statement and get him to submit a written down commitment.

The area Nyumba Kumi Chairperson revealed that the businessman was a serial debtor with many cases reported to him.

"Locals have made several complaints about him with me and the police. Some have even gone as far as hiring goons to attack him but he never learns," he said.

The residents now demand that the businessman sell either one of his cars or parcels of land to service his debts or at least commit to paying them over time.

Police officers arrived at the scene and cordoned off the business premises. An investigation was launched to ascertain the claims by the deceased's family.

Table banking is a popular savings and investment plan for bodaboda riders, with a group in Nanyuki buying land and building houses for themselves.
