Mary Lilian Waithera's bosses revealed her last assignment at the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) before she was shot dead in Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD).
Speaking during her requiem mass on Tuesday, February 21, NHIF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Kamunyo disclosed that Waithera had been charged to solve a system glitch.
Kamunyo stated that the devoted staffer ensured that the matter was solved and even cross-checked with affected facilities before leaving the office.
"On February 13 at 4:54 p.m, she sent a message to one of the hospital groups to tell them that the system was working and they should continue with the service.
"Two minutes later, she sent a message to some group of hospitals in Nairobi to assure them about a query they had. A few minutes after that, she left us," the CEO recounted.
NHIF Chairman Michael Kamau eulogised Waithera as a diligent and efficient employee who had a great rapport with her colleagues.
"Mary's commitment to the service was exemplary. She was a dependable, forthright, thoughtful and caring colleague and her peers as well as supervisors relied on her to get the work done," Kamau stated.
After completing her assignment, Waithera left the NHIF headquarters in the company of her workmate. She was later pronounced dead after she was shot dead on her way home.
One man, a licensed firearm holder, was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in connection to the shooting.
On February 21, DCI boss Mohamed Amin revealed that the ballistics analysis of the weapon confiscated from the suspect did not match the bullet recovered from her body.
Amin further ruled out that the 42-year-old mother of two had been taken out by a sniper, explaining that the bullet was fired from a pistol.
The bullet was established to have been fired from a 9-millimetre firearm. The DCI boss explained that snipers use weapons with longer barrels for accuracy.
However, he refused to rule out that Waithera's death was premeditated.
