Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya shared his February 2023 payslip, where his Ksh1.1 million salary was deducted to Ksh97,197.
From the payslip shared on Thursday, February 23, the first-time lawmaker earned a gross pay of Ksh1,171,525 with deductions totalling Ksh1,074,327.
The Ksh1.1 million gross pay was accumulated from his basic salary of Ksh466,000, with the remainder being a house, sitting and telephone allowances.
Pay As You Earn (PAYE) was among the deductions, which saw him part way with Ksh337,840 and mortgage contributions that amounted to Ksh563,000.
Salasya paid for his car loan to Ksh89,000 and made a Ksh53,676 contribution to the staff pension fund.
Other deductions were to the National Hospital Insurance Fund and various Saccos.
The lawmaker shared his payslip in response to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's statements on the government being owned by shareholders.
"Let me demonstrate to Gachagua, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot, and my great friend Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen that all Kenyans have shares in this country.
"I contribute Ksh300,000 plus to revenue and the President is the only watchman for our contributions and it's our right to ask for development," the legislator explained.
Following his decision to share his payslip, Kenyans debated on the deductions as many wondered over the huge deductions slashed from his salary.
Others also praised him for being transparent, given he was among the few lawmakers ever to share their payslips with Kenyans.
"Boss, you have ve posted something your fellow housemates would have never done. Congratulations on the transparency," Theo Poghisyo commented.
"When one becomes an MP, get a financial advisor so as not to make wrong financial decisions. Most of the salary goes to a mortgage which is a liability," Sam Baja opined.
