President William Ruto and the Cabinet granted Plan International, a humanitarian organisation, approval to set up its headquarters in Nairobi.
The resolution which was made on Tuesday, February 28, during a Cabinet meeting at State House, indicated that the firm picked Kenya due to its conducive business environment.
The grant of approval by Cabinet allowed Plan International to move its global headquarters from London, UK, to Nairobi.
Plan International is an internationally acclaimed not-for-profit humanitarian and development organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.
Established in 1937, Plan International has an active presence in 75 countries worldwide.
“This move is a significant boost to Kenya’s status as a leading investment and economic hub, and comes hot on the heels of J.P. Morgan, a leading global financial conglomerate, choosing to establish their regional headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya,” a 6-paged despatch from Cabinet read in part.
Additionally, Ruto’s Cabinet approved hosting the East African Community Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency’s regional centre for aviation medicine in Nairobi.
The cabinet indicated that the new hub would serve all East African Community members by providing essential services.
Countries lined up to benefit from the aviation hub include Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The administration’s resolve to improve the lives of all Kenyan’s through economic and social equity remains at the core of the Cabinet’s agenda as manifestly set out in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BeTA),” the cabinet indicated.
According to Ruto’s administration, the global hub would boost Kenya’s business hub image and attract investors in various sectors.
Multi-national firms are also set to spur Ruto’s manufacturing agenda and create jobs for professionals and skilled labourers.
The resolution came days after Ruto allowed a Tanzanian firm to establish a gas plant in Dongo Kundu, Mombasa.
