New housing trends emerge every now and then and spread across the world as the world embraces them.

From iron sheet houses to bus houses to wood mansions, Kenyans are increasingly becoming receptive to new housing trends in the market.

Considering the high cost of living in Kenya, many young people including new couples and single men and women are looking for ways to hope onto the latest trends in the market without necessarily breaking the bank.

This has led to a surge in the demand for container bedsitters according to Michael Ndung'u the marketing manager of Frontier Containers Fabricators East Africa Limited.

The company specialises in fabricating and selling container houses at its workshop in Syokimau, Machakos County, along Mombasa Road, and one of its hottest products is container bedsitters.

"We sell the units at around Ksh680,000 but those we sell to often rent them out or put them on Airbnb," Ndung'u revealed exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke.

For those who rent them out, the container bedsitters goes for as low as Ksh7,500 per month and are often loved by young couples and singles.

"They love them for their features including the kitchenette fitted with drawers and a sink, a bathroom, and a toilet," he indicated.

Other features of the container bedsitters include wardrobes, and walls made with gypsum while flooring is done using tiles.

When it comes to the cost of fabrication, Ndung'u noted that they spend about Ksh300,000 but this is dependent on the needs of the client as they provide customised services.

While the company admitted that it is gaining traction in the market, there are still challenges it has to deal with especially considering the Kenyan culture that is conditioned to conventional houses.

"Kenyans often compare the container bedsitters to the normal brick houses and that is our biggest challenge because this is a new concept that most of them have yet to embrace," he notes.

Ndung'u emphasised that since the company started three years ago, they have supplied several units across the Nairobi metropolis and the Western Kenya region where most of their clientele is located.
