Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen addressed the continuing rehabilitation of some major roads in the country under the Nairobi Expressway including Waiyaki Way, Uhuru Highway, and Mombasa Road.

The CS announced that the rehabilitation of the three major roads under the Expressway will be completed in a span of one year - latest March 2024.

Murkomen spoke while appearing before the Senate Standing Committee on Roads, Transportation, and Housing chaired by Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang'wah on Friday, March 3.

Furthermore, the Transport CS assured Kenyans that all roads under the expressway will be upgraded to international standards to avoid rampant complaints from motorists.

Additionally, Murkomen told the committee that besides the roads under the Expressway, the Ministry was planning to make changes on all other roads in the country.

"Going forward all roads in Kenya will have ducts that will be used for water, electricity, and fiber optic cables," Murkomen announced.

According to the CS, the move was aimed at avoiding the destruction of roads when moving the infrastructure during road construction and expansion.

Other members of the committee were Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, Marsabit Senator Mohamed Said Chute, and nominated Senator Crystal Asige.

"I look forward to a working partnership with the Committee and the entire Senate as we discharge our respective mandates," Murkomen concluded.

In November 2022, the government announced plans to allocate Ksh9 billion for the rehabilitation of the Mombasa road.

However, the move was fiercely debated by Members of Parliament who argued that the company ought to pay for the damages caused to Mombasa Road during the construction of the Expressway.

"We barely have two lanes on Mombasa Road. We would want the constructor to be brought before the committee so that they can answer questions regarding the rehabilitation of the highway," Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna suggested.

On February 7, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) Director General Kungu Ngung'u informed the public that three footbridges would be added along Mombasa Road for ease of use by pedestrians.

"There is a need to enhance the facility that was existing before the Expressway," he noted.
