Central Organization for Trade Unions - Kenya (COTU-K) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli declared full support of the government over recent summons by state agencies including those by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Speaking at a press conference in his Kilifi Home on Tuesday, March 7, Atwoli explained that the state's decision was informed by the need to give an account for taxpayers' money.

He welcomed the decision by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to name individuals he claimed were responsible for emptying Ksh16 billion from public coffers days before the August 2022 poll.

"People should be mentioned and ashamed and, if possible, be arraigned in court so that justice to Kenyans and our taxes is met.

"The government is carrying out investigations which I support and people are being summoned to explain their wealth and riches, which is good," Atwoli stated.

Atwoli pushed for Gachagua to hasten the naming of the culprits who allegedly stole money from Kenyans, adding that it would provide the much-needed closure in the Azimio coalition party of which he was part.

He claimed that he was among the top key leaders of the coalition party, which was rocked by claims of internal sabotage after they lost the election to the Kenya Kwanza wing.

"People will keep on suspecting that anyone who was in Azimio at that time was part and parcel of those who went away with taxpayers' money.

"Those who were taking government money or going to Uhuru or Raila or anybody else by our names claiming that they want to fund us yet the money did not get to us must be known by Kenyans," Atwoli stated.

The COTU boss' remarks came after the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o revealed her role in the transfer of Ksh15 billion from the Treasury.

Appearing before the Parliamentary Public Petitions Committee on March 7, Nyakang'o confessed to wiring the money to a top government office but claimed to be under duress from a Cabinet Secretary.

She tabled findings including Whatsapp Messages from the top CS who, at one point begged, "Please help us urgently clear this to enable us to deal with the challenges of petroleum."
