Three thugs on a motorbike were on Wednesday, March 8, burnt to death by an irate mob after a high-speed chase in the Makongeni area, Kiambu County.
In a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the thugs who had robbed a woman attempting to flee on the bike were stopped by a speeding matatu along the road.
"The woman's cry prompted the boda boda riders to give chase after the bike at breakneck speed, as no less than 30 motorbikes flew past the busy highway baying for the trio's blood," DCI detailed.
The thugs tried to avoid a head-on collision with the matatu but unfortunately, they swayed off the road and landed on the tarmac.
An angry mob including other boda boda riders caught up with the trio and descended on them with the riders hulling insults for tainting their name.
"By the time police officers who were attending to other emergencies arrived, the three had unfortunately been crushed and their bodies set ablaze," DCI disclosed.
After the incident, police moved their charred remains to the General Kago hospital morgue in Thika town to await identification by their kin.
Police also recovered three knives belonging to the suspects, a mobile phone, and personal effects robbed from the victim.
"Members of the public are advised not to take the law into their own hands but hand over such suspects to the police for justice in a court of law," DCI advised.
Cases of criminals using boda boda to make a quick getaway after a heist have been on the rise and members of the public were urged to be cautious as they conduct their businesses.
On March 4, DCI announced that a suspected robber on a motorbike was killed after engaging the police in a speed chase on a busy highway and hiding in traffic.
Another incident involving a motorbike was reported in Githurai after the thugs robbed a man at gunpoint and fled.
However, after a fierce fire exchange with the cops, one of the thugs was shot dead.
