A sombre cloud engulfed Mombasa City on Wednesday, March 8, as family, friends and former colleagues converged at Joacham Hospital Funeral Home to collect the body of Julius Marwa, a traffic cop who died after a motorist ran him over.
Donned in full traffic police uniform, Marwa's colleagues carried his body from the morgue and gradually marched to a waiting hearse.
They gathered around the casket while grieving the officer who passed on in the line of duty.
His body was set to be transported to his rural home in Kuria East, Migori County head of his burial set for Friday, March 10.
According to a prior statement from the family, the fallen officer's body was set to spend the night at his Mombasa home before the burial.
Lobby groups and Kenyans from various quarters condemned his death as they called for justice.
Led by Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI), the lobby groups, committed to pursuing justice for the slain officer by assisting in the litigation process.
“MUHURI is saddened by his death and determined to follow the matter to its logical conclusion,” the activists noted.
"Police officers are humans too, we demand justice for the officer," they added.
Marwa's family members also decried reckless driving, condemning the driver who claimed the life of their loved one.
The officer was pronounced dead on arrival on February 27, while controlling traffic at Buxton Street.
Police arrested the suspect following investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
