Police officers on Sunday evening, March 12, raided a pharmacy based in Mtwapa, Mombasa County, and recovered over 10 boxes of assorted drugs and equipment worth Ksh2 million.
In a joint operation with officers drawn from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board Kenya (PPB), they recovered drugs branded Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA).
Reports indicated that the pharmacy belonged to a man who went viral in 2016 for protesting the alcoblow initiative and subsequent arrest by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials.
In a statement by PPB issued on Monday, March 13, the board's Head of the Crime Investigations and Enforcement Unit, Dennis Otieno, affirmed that they had received intel about illegal operations at the chemist.
He added that the store had a storage facility at the back where the goods were found, including government drugs.
According to Otieno, PPB had been gathering intelligence on the suspect for weeks before the Sunday raid.
"We have been in Mombasa for the last week for our routine inspections and on Sunday we were within the Mtwapa area. The person is well known and we have been gathering intelligence on him," he pointed out.
Otieno also stated that the suspect escaped the raid minutes before the police arrived at the premises. He added that he had sold a stock of drugs on Sunday morning, hours before the operation.
"The owner of the pharmacy is a well-established person who witnesses reported stocking the drugs.
"If we had impounded him earlier on, we would have also found Augmentin labelled Kemsa, which we were told he had already sold by the time we arrived," Otieno added.
The man made headlines in December 2016 after he objected and expressed displeasure over the alcoblow operations.
Following the video, social media users adopted the "When you catch me like a rat on the highway" phrase which became famous owing to its comical nature.
