A number of suspects broke into Muindi Mweusi Supermarket in Tassia Estate, Embakasi, on Monday, March 21, and stole goods worth Ksh15 million before vandalising the outlet.

The supermarket’s Operations Director Peter Maguli revealed to the press that the thieves raided the supermarket at around 10:00 pm after they had closed for the day.

Moreover, according to Maguli, one of the staff members returned to the supermarket after receiving notification of the robbery and was injured by the robbers.

“They took advantage of the fact that the supermarket was closed early. One of our staff came back and was badly injured,” Maguli stated.

Additionally, Maguli stated that the individuals vandalised property and stole goods including TV sets, fridges, food, and other items.

He noted that the thieves gained entry to the supermarket by throwing stones at the door and breaking the locks.

Police officers, who arrived 30 minutes after the robbery kicked off, arrested 10 suspects found at the scene.

Embakasi sub-county Police Commander Makau Masai further confirmed that the authorities had launched investigations into the matter.

"We were able to apprehend and detain ten suspects. The supermarket owners have yet to record their statement,” Maasai stated.

Moreover, the commander claimed that the suspects could have come from the Azimio-led protests held on Monday, March 20 in Nairobi.

“The suspects might have come from the demonstrations after we barricaded some roads,” added the commander.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga reiterated that the protests that will be held every week on Monday were meant to address the high cost of living and protest the August 2022 national elections outcome, which they claimed was rigged.
