President William Ruto on Thursday, March 23, stated that his government is in the process of hiring 1,300 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) tutors.

While addressing students at Kisii National Polytechnic, the Head of State assured that part of the newly hired tutors will work at the institution.

Ruto recognised the challenges that the academic institution faces, especially, inadequate human resource capacity including tutors.

"Most of you teachers are paid by the college. I would like to announce that we are hiring 1,300 TVET teachers, and we will ensure that 50 of them will come to teach in this institution," Ruto stated.

Under the TVET Trainers Qualification Framework, anyone willing to work as a tutor must have a Diploma or a Degree in the technical courses being taught in the institutions.

In a circular that was shared by TVET Director General Dr Kipkirui Langat, the authority explained that it is vested with the responsibility to accredit all the persons involved in training in the TVET sector to ensure quality of training.

"One of the things the Authority has developed to ensure the delivery of job ready graduates is the development of Trainer Qualification Framework, a proposed set of guidelines designed to be used during training, recruitment and maintenance of quality trainers in both public and private TVET institutions," Dr Kipkirui stated.

He also promoted his Digital Superhighway agenda, and announced the purchase and distribution of modern technologies in all TVET institutions.

"We will convert our TVET institutions into digital academic organisations, and Kisii National Polytechnic is going to be one of them.

"In the phase one, we will distribute computers in 100 TVET institutions, and ensure that every academic organisation has a digital laboratory," Ruto note.

Ruto was optimistic that the new digital programme will spring up massive job opportunities in the country's workforce.

In particular, Ruto expressed confidence that the Digital Superhighway agenda will ensure that many young Kenyans are employed in various sectors.

"By the time I'll be coming back to Kisii, I expect to be told that 1,000 young people have been employed using the new computers that the government shall have distributed," Ruto assured.
