Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday, March 24, disclosed that former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, called him up during his woes with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI).
Speaking during an event in Kisii County, Gachagua claimed that Matiang'i called him after former President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to pick up his phone call.
He divulged that the two engaged in a conversation touching his woes - which Gachagua termed as self-inflicted.
Gachagua further revealed that he remained frank with the former CS during the private conversation and even reminded him of how he (Gachagua) was mistreated in Uhuru's administration.
According to the DP, Matiang'i was not at fault and was allegedly misused by the past administration in targeting President William Ruto and his allies.
"In the previous administration, Matiang'i was used to intimidate us. Now that they are out of government, they have left him. He is now alone.
"Recently, when he brought trouble to himself by claiming the police raided his house, he called them and they refused to pick up his calls. He called me. Despite being one of the victims, I picked up the phone and told him how he was misused," Gachagua claimed.
The DP also added that he promised the embattled CS that Ruto's regime would be different in running the government and not go after those who opposed them.
Gachagua made the comments weeks after Matiang'i got a reprieve when charges against him were dropped.
In a letter to the DCI, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) determined that the charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and publication of false information could not be proven.
Matiang'i had been charged by the DCI following an alleged raid that occurred at his Karen home on February 8 with lawyers linked to the former CS claiming that it was orchestrated by detectives from the agency.
Soon after the charges were dropped, various reports indicated that a truce between Matiang'i and the government was brokered by political leaders from the Gusii region.
Notably, he was also pictured at a closed-door meeting with Education CS Ezekiel Machogu before his case was dropped.
Gachagua's claims could not be ascertained as Matiang'i did not issue a response at the time of publication.
