A section of Kenyan journalists has gone ahead and made waves internationally in the media industry.
While a majority of them launched their careers, reporting and writing for local outlets, they have climbed the ladder to earn global recognition.
Kenyans.co.ke compiled a list of ten journalists who through sheer hard work and talent have carved their mark on the international scene.
Larry Madowo
Larry Madowo is one of the most successful journalists in Kenya who works for CNN as the host of African Voices Changemakers.
The journalist joined CNN from BBC on May 2021, where he had been working as African Correspondent for the media giant.
Madowo started his career at KTN aged 20, as a trainee reporter. Madowo in a glittering career has also worked for NTV and CNBC Africa.
Bashir Mohamed Caato
Bashir Mohamed Caato is one of the most decorated journalists in Kenya. The journalist who currently works with Aljazeera English. has previously worked with different international media organizations.
The award-winning journalist made a name at BBC where he reported in English, Swahili and Somali in East Africa. He has also worked with the Middle East Eye and ITV.
While working with ITV he won the prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) award.
Edith Kimani
Edith Kimani is among several journalists who have played a great role in making Deutsche Welle (DW) a popular media station in Africa.
Kimani joined DW in 2015 as the East Africa correspondent and the host of DW’s Eco@Africa.
The gifted journalist was reported in 2017 and travelled to Berlin, Germany where she worked as a reporter and news anchor.
Her career highlights have been moderating two debates at the World Economic Forum as well as hosting Global Media Forum and G20 Compact for Africa Meeting.
Andrew Wasike
Andrew Wasike is another veteran journalist plying his trade at the Berlin-based DW.
Wasike works as a freelance journalist for DW and he joined the company a decade ago in 2013.
Wasike previously worked for NTV and AFP Communications before joining DW as a freelancer where he has been instrumental in covering 2017 and 2022 general elections in Kenya.
Allan Namu
Allan Namu who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Africa Uncensored was appointed Chief Course Instructor by Thompson Reuters Foundation on Wednesday, January 4.
The renowned investigation journalist previously worked as special projects editor at KTN. He is well known for explosive investigative pieces he did with the then now Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali (Jicho Pevu).
Ann Mawathe
Ann Mawathe is the Reuters Chief Producer Visuals, Africa a position she assumed in January 2022.
Before joining Reuters, the University of Leicester trained journalist worked with BBC as Africa Health Editor.
Locally, she has worked as a reporter for Nation Media Group and a producer for Royal Media Services Limited.
Esther Kahumbi
Former Citizen TV journalist Esther Kahumbi Makori made news in October 2016 when she moved to London to work as a BBC reporter.
She has been instrumental in popularising BBC Swahili programmes as she hosts Dira ya Dunia TV.
Vincent Makori
Vincent Makori is one of the veteran journalists in the media industry having spent over two decades at Voice of America.
Makori who joined VOA in 2001 is currently the Managing Editor (TV), of English to Africa Service.
He previously worked for DW as an editor and radio host between May 1998 and November 2001.
Makori started his journalism career in January 1995 as an editor and TV host for Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC).
Saumu Mwasimba
Saumu Mwasimba is another big-name representing Kenya in DW where she is the editor and presenter of DW Kiswahili Channel.
Mwasimba, who has Tanzanian roots, joined DW in 2005, previously working with different local media stations. She currently hosts Karibuni Show which is an entertainment show,
Caro Robi
Carol Robi is a renowned Kenyan journalist working as a BBC Swahili journalist. Robi started her career as a journalist at KBC before moving to DW where she was poached by BBC.
She is famous for hosting Amka na BBC morning show and Dira ya Dunia with BBC
BMJ Muriithi
BMJ Muriiithi works as an international broadcaster and multimedia specialist with VOA’s Swahili service.
Before moving to Washington DC to work for VOA, Muriithi worked as an international correspondent for Nation Media Group.
His career peaks are covering U.N General Assembly in New York and the Africa Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
