On Sunday, April 2, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni revealed intrigues behind Migori Senator Eddy Oketch adopting the name Gicheru.

According to Parliament of Kenya records, the Migori Senator’s official name read, Eddy Oketch Gicheru.

While speaking during a church service in Ruiru, Kioni explained that Eddy’s life was a classic grass-to-grace story.

“This young man should serve as an encouragement to young people in Kenya.

“He was a street boy in Nairobi living under bridges until he met a good Samaritan who adopted him," Kioni revealed.

According to the Jubilee Secretary-General, Eddy’s foster father was named Gicheru and after taking in the poor boy, he formally gave him his name.

The young boy’s life took a better turn as he was immediately enrolled in a school where he excelled and earned a position at Friends School Kamusinga where he did his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2008.

Immediately after KCSE, Eddy joined African Leadership Academy where he graduated with a  Diploma in Leadership Entrepreneurship African Studies and Culminating Community Service Projects in 2010.

He then travelled to the US in 2011 where he enrolled at Trinity College Hartford for a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

The first-term senator is one of few legislators to have graduated from an Ivy League School having done a Master’s Degree in Global Affairs at Yale University.

The youthful Senator is currently enrolled at the University of Nairobi where he is taking a Postgraduate (PhD) degree in Philosophy.

Eddy has risen to fame due to his close association with Raila Odinga as he has been an ever-present figure in the leader of opposition's rallies across the country.

He won the Migori senatorial seat in 2022, using the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket having previously unsuccessfully vied for the same seat in 2018 using the Federal Party of Kenya (FPK) ticket.
