Three people were shot and seriously injured on Wednesday, April 5, after supporters of Embakasi West Member of Parliament Mark Mureithi Mwenje and his predecessor George Theuri clashed in Umoja 1 area, Nairobi.
Speaking to the press, MP Mwenje claimed that he was allegedly roughed up by attackers he claimed were goons under the support of his predecessor before his bodyguard intervened to rescue him.
Two victims of the shooting commotion were rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital for medical services. The other injured person was taken to Metropolitan Hospital.
The MP argued that he had convened a meeting with his supporters to ponder on the way forward over the distribution of bursaries in the constituencies as well as create a roadmap for the upcoming projects under his development plan.
He further alleged that the rival group associated with former MP Theuri stormed the swimming pool area where he was making preparations for the bursary issuance.
"We were at a swimming pool in Umoja 1 with my National Government CDF committee members planning on issuing bursaries to university students when we were attacked.
"When they stormed our venue, they started by beating me, my personal security intervened to stop them but they continued to attack and attempted to snatch his pistol, they then shot my supporters," the MP explained.
One of the victims was shot in the left thigh while another sustained injuries in the abdomen.
While reporting the incident at the Buruburu Police Station Wednesday evening, however, Theuri claimed that the firing bullet was dispatched by the MP’s bodyguard.
In a rebuttal, the MP disputed Theuri's statement, alleging the victims were not shot by his bodyguard.
Police officers arrived at the scene and arrested Mwenje's bodyguard before taking his pistol. Five spent cartridges were recovered at the scene.
Mwenje's bodyguard will be arraigned in court on Thursday, April 6.
