There was concern after two schools in Western Region burnt down at almost the same time on the night of Sunday, April 9.
The first incident was reported at St Peter’s Boys High School in Mumias, Kakamega County.
Almost immediately after, another fire was reported at Kivaywa Boys High School, also located in Kakamega County.
In St Peters Mumias, the fire razed a dormitory with a capacity of 90 students to the ground.
There were no reported fatalities reported since the fire was first reported after students had gone to the dining hall for supper.
The School Principal Crisphinus Owino, however, confirmed that the students had lost all their personal effects and bedding during the incident.
“We have some extra mattresses and double-decker beds to take care of 80 of the affected students.
“We are making arrangements for the remaining 10 learners,” the principal revealed the measures the school had taken following the inferno.
Firefighters from Kakamega County, however, swung into action and swiftly prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent dormitories.
“We do not know whether it is an electrical fault and it was deliberately started by one of the students,” Owino revealed.
St Peters announced that the fire would not disrupt learning activities while in Kivaywa, a statement on the same was not immediately available.
At Kivaywa Boys, which is located in the Matete area of Lugari Constituency, it was reported that a fire razed two dormitories.
In both incidents, the cause of the fires was not determined but investigations are already in earnest.
