A dormitory at Musingu High School, Kakamega, was razed down by fire on Wednesday, October 14.

A video seen by Kenyans.co.ke shows clouds of smoke emerging from Oparanya hostel which was named in honor of the Kakamega governor.

A section of the crowd tried to put out the flames but to no avail.

"The fire broke out at around 10 am. This is not the first time the dormitory is being burnt down," Bernard Kibuzi, one of the first respondents to the scene, spoke to a Standard reporter.

"The students were busy in class when the fire broke out, so we believe they are all safe. We only managed to salvage a few items," he said.

Another resident, Rogers Anyika stated that it almost took two-three hours in order to contain the fire.

No casualties have been confirmed. The cause of the fire is yet to be established though various sources claim the fire could have been caused by an electric fault.

A similar incident happened in the school on November 9, 2019, when KCSE candidates woke up to a morning scare after one of their dormitories was razed down.

Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, was among the first leaders to visit the school to ensure that the students were okay to continue with their exams despite losing property in the fire.

The incident came barely twelve months after another dormitory in the same school was razed down on September 9, 2019, leaving over 350 students counting losses and with no place to sleep.

The cause of the September fire detected at around 8.30 a.m. was not immediately established but luckily no student was injured.

County Executive for Roads, Public Works and Energy Collins Matemba also visited the school after learning of the incident.
