Police arrested a 31-year-old man on Wednesday, April, 12 in Kisumu for careless driving and knocking other vehicles, and injuring 7 people in Kondele, Kisumu County.
Nyanza regional traffic police boss Joseph Nyaga reported that the suspect had sneaked away with his father's Toyota Prado car in a 9pm-incident on Tuesday, April, 11.
"Upon reaching Kondele roundabout, the suspect knocked a motorist from behind, injuring him and two pillion passengers," stated Nyaga.
The suspect didn't stop after the first accident only to ram into a hotel where five people were seriously injured.
His parents told police, their son who had escaped with the vehicle was suffering from mental illness.
Boda boda operators attempted to ambush him but he escaped and knocked two motor vehicles in the process.
He then drove into Kisumu Central police station where he sought refuge, as boda boda operators pursued him, baying for his blood.
Those injured during the accidents were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment. They were later discharged after treatment.
Police launched investigations into the matter as they prepared to charge him in court for breaking several traffic laws.
Nyaga warned the public against driving vehicles without a valid driving license. He also cautioned parents to be extra careful with car keys to avoid similar scenarios in the future.
In June, 2021, a parent was charged in Kandara court, Murang'a County with allowing his 7-year-old son to drive his vehicle. The suspect was arrested after a video of his son driving the vehicle circulated on social media.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), a person found driving without a driving license is liable to a fine of Ksh7000.
