Eliud Kipchoge Finishes Sixth as Evans Chebet Wins Boston Marathon

Celebrated Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge on Monday, April 17, finished sixth in the 2023 Boston Marathon.

Kipchoge, who led a pack of 11 athletes to break away, dropped back after 25 kilometres. He clocked a time of 2:09:23.

2022 defending champion Evans Chebet won the race after crossing the finish line  at 2:05:54.

Tanzanian Gabriel Geay (2:06:04) and Benson Kipruto (2:06:04) finished second and third respectively.

Chebet will take home Ksh20.2 million ($150,000) for winning the race. He became the sixth male athlete in history to defend his Boston Marathon title back to back.

The winning time is the third fastest in the history of the race after Geoffrey Mutai (2:03:02) and Robert Cheruiyot (2:05:52)

Other Kenyans in the race included Augustine Choge, Albert Korir, Hassan Chahdi, John Korir, and Mathew Korir.

Meanwhile, Hellen Obiri clinched the title in the 2023 women's professional title.

Obiri, who bagged her first-ever major marathon win, clocked a time of 2:21:38.

With the victory, she became the only woman in history to win world titles in indoor and outdoor track,  cross country, and marathon races.

Ethiopian Beriso Amane and Lonah Salpeter (Israel) finished second and third respectively.

Amane clocked 2:21:50, finishing seven seconds ahead of Salpeter (2:21:57).

President William Ruto led Kenyans in celebrating her stars in Boston. 

"Congratulations Evans Chebet for triumphantly defending your Boston Marathon title. Well in Benson Kipruto for bringing home Bronze. Your incredible outing highlights your daredevil attitude.

Eliud Kipchoge you are the beast: an inspiration to generations to dream far beyond their potential. Hongera," a statement by Ruto read.
