A Garissa University Official was on Wednesday, April 19, accused of forging a Business Information Technology degree certificate and transcripts from Mt Kenya University to gain a varsity job and earn a Master's Degree.

In a statement from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the suspect used the fake degree certificate to secure employment as a senior computer technologist at Garissa University.

The suspect was also accused of securing admission at Kenyatta University to pursue a Master's Degree in Business Administration in Management Information Systems.

The law, however, caught up with the suspect after he was arrested by EACC detectives on Tuesday, April 18. This is after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) directed the police to arrest him on three charges.

These include forgery and deceiving principals, uttering false documents and giving incorrect information to a public service employee.

While being interrogated, the suspect reportedly claimed a witch-hunt on him while he argued that the majority of people in his workplace had used similar means.

"Why are you focusing on me only yet almost everyone at my workplace has a fake academic certificate?" the suspect argued.

He was released on police bail of Ksh50,000 and will be arraigned in Court to answer to the charges on Wednesday, April 19.

The detectives launched an investigation into a possible syndicate that is producing and selling forged certificates.

In a past statement, the Commission had called upon universities to come up with measures to end the vice.

One of the measures proposed by EACC was for Vice Chancellors and university councils to work with the Commission for University Education for the verification of documents.

"It is important that concerted efforts that bring on board all concerned stakeholders be embarked upon, to seek a lasting solution on how these vices can be curbed. Where such mechanisms exist, measures should be put in place to strengthen them and make the verification system foolproof," EACC previously stated.
